Craftsmanship

Handcrafted end grain cutting board in the Runewood workshop

Made with care. Built to last.

Every Runewood piece is made in our workshop in Småland, Sweden.

We work in small volumes, with a strong focus on material, proportion, finish and feel. Each product passes through many stages before it is ready to leave the workshop, but the goal remains the same throughout: to create something that is beautiful, functional and made to be used for years.

The material

Good craftsmanship begins with good material.

We work primarily with carefully selected hardwoods such as oak, ash and maple. Each piece of timber has its own grain, colour and character, and part of the work is understanding how to use those natural variations rather than trying to hide them.

The wood is selected, inspected and matched with the finished product in mind.

No two pieces will ever be exactly alike.

That is part of their character.

The work

Our products combine traditional woodworking with modern tools and machinery where they improve precision and consistency.

Some stages require accuracy down to fractions of a millimetre. Others depend almost entirely on touch, judgement and experience.

Shaping, joining, sanding, edge work and finishing all contribute to the final result. Throughout the process, each piece is inspected and refined before it moves on.

Machines help us achieve precision.

The final standard is still decided by hand.

The surface

A wooden product should feel as good as it looks.

Considerable time is spent preparing and refining each surface before finishing. The wood is sanded through multiple stages, carefully checked and prepared so that the grain remains tactile without feeling rough.

The final finish enhances the natural colour and structure of the timber rather than covering it.

You should still be able to see the wood.

And you should still be able to feel it.

Time matters

Woodworking cannot always be rushed.

Glue needs time to cure. Wood needs time to settle. Finishes need time to harden properly. Some stages involve active work in the workshop. Others simply require patience.

Both are part of the process.

We would rather allow a piece the time it needs than shorten the process simply to make it faster.

Quality in the details

Quality is something we look for throughout the entire build.

The timber, joints, surfaces, edges and finish are all inspected before a product is considered complete. If something does not meet our standard, it is corrected or rejected.

Natural variations in grain and colour are part of working with real wood.

Careless details are not.

Made to be used

Runewood products are not made to remain untouched.

They are made for kitchens, tables and everyday life.

Wood will change with use. It will develop marks, deepen in colour and gain character over time. We see that as part of the material, not something to be avoided.

Our aim is simple:

To make objects that feel good when they are new, work well every day, and become better known with time.
